A 12-year-old boy has become the fastest person to sail single-handedly across the Channel in an 8ft Optimist – a class of children’s boat more usually used to teach sailing on lakes.

Tom Goron, from Brittany, made the 60-mile journey from the Isle of Wight in 14 hours and 21 minutes, beating 15-year-old Violette Dorange’s previous record by 35 minutes.

Goron took two years to plan the trip with his father, who teaches sailing and followed him in another boat. He said that his son, physically exhausted and sick, had come close to giving up five hours into the journey, but after taking ten minutes to think about it, he’d decided to persevere.
